Today, it’s hard to imagine arriving at an airport, station, or terminal without seeing hundreds of people dragging their wheeled suitcases. However, this relatively recent invention took much longer than expected to become popular, despite its simplicity.
Although luggage has existed for centuries, wheels were not added until 1970. The credit goes to Bernard Sadow, an executive at a luggage company who, after a tiring trip carrying his bags through an airport, thought there had to be a better way to transport them. When he got home, he attached wheels to a regular suitcase and added a strap to pull it along. This was the birth of the first wheeled suitcase.
Sadow patented his invention as “luggage with wheels,” but at first, it was hard to sell the idea. Many men resisted pulling a suitcase, seeing it as unmanly. It wasn’t until the 1980s, with the invention of the modern trolley with a retractable handle, that the concept really took off. This version was developed by Robert Plath, a pilot who designed a more stable and easy-to-manoeuvre model, perfect for airports.
Since then, wheeled luggage has kept evolving: today there are spinner models, ultra-light versions, and even smart suitcases. Without a doubt, an invention that transformed the way we travel and lightened the load of our adventures.
