Bolgatanga, often called “Bolga,” is one of the most fascinating destinations in the Upper East Region. Known for its vibrant handicrafts, deep history and unique cultural traditions, the town offers visitors an authentic look at northern life. If you are planning a short trip, here is a two-day itinerary to experience the best of Bolgatanga and its surroundings.
Day 1: Culture, Crafts and Local Heritage
Start your day at the famous Bolgatanga Market, held twice a week and well known across the region. This is the perfect place to see local artisans selling the colourful straw hats and hand-woven baskets that have made Bolga famous throughout Ghana and beyond.
Next, visit the Bolgatanga Museum, where you can learn about the history, culture and traditions of the Upper East Region. From there, head to the Kulungugu Bomb Site, an important historical location where an assassination attempt on Ghana’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, took place in 1962.
In the afternoon, travel to the nearby Sirigu Art and Pottery Village (SWOPA). Here you will find beautiful wall paintings, pottery and traditional crafts created by local women. It is a great opportunity to support community art and learn about local creativity.
Day 2: Nature, History and Unique Experiences
Begin the second day with a visit to the famous Paga Crocodile Pond, one of the most unusual attractions. Here, crocodiles are considered sacred and live peacefully alongside humans. Visitors can even take photos while touching these remarkable animals.
Later, explore the Tongo Hills and the Tongo-Tenzug Shrine, known for their dramatic rock formations and spiritual significance. On your way back, stop in Navrongo to see the historic Navrongo Cathedral, one of the oldest churches
