ETIAS, the European Travel Information and Authorisation System, is an electronic travel permit required for travellers from countries that are visa-exempt before entering the European Union or the Schengen Area. It is an online system designed to improve security and speed up border checks. ETIAS is not a visa and does not replace a passport.

For a Ghanaian audience, it is important to understand who this applies to. Holders of a Ghanaian passport usually need a Schengen visa, so ETIAS does not replace that requirement. ETIAS is only for travellers whose nationality allows visa-free entry to Europe. However, many Ghanaians living abroad or holding another eligible passport may need ETIAS, so it is useful to know how it works.

ETIAS is mandatory for visa-exempt travellers whether they are visiting Europe for tourism, business or short-term studies. Once approved, it is valid for up to three years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first. One of the advantages of ETIAS is its simple documentation process. Applicants only need a valid passport with clear personal details and a digital photo. A biometric (chip) passport is not compulsory, but it helps make border checks faster.

The application is completed online and asks for personal information such as full name, date and place of birth, nationality, address, email and phone number. It also includes questions about education, work history, the European country you plan to visit, and any past medical, criminal or migration issues.

ETIAS is free for travellers under 18 years old. Adults pay a fee of 7 euros, making it an affordable and important step for those eligible who are planning trips to Europe in advance.
