One of the most powerful wildlife experiences in the world is trekking with mountain gorillas in Rwanda, especially in Volcanoes National Park. Several habituated gorilla families live there, and coming face to face with these impressive primates often becomes one of the most unforgettable moments of any African journey.

The park is located about two hours from Kigali, the capital city, making Rwanda one of the most accessible places on the continent to see gorillas in their natural environment. Each day, only small groups of visitors (a maximum of eight people per gorilla family) are allowed to spend up to one hour observing and photographing the gorillas as they eat, play and rest in the misty mountain forests.

To join a gorilla trek, visitors must purchase a permit in advance. Permits are limited and should be booked several months ahead. The fees play a key role in protecting the gorillas and supporting nearby African communities that live alongside these forests. Rwanda also offers other outstanding primate experiences. In Nyungwe Forest National Park, a vast tropical rainforest in the southwest of the country, travellers can trek to see chimpanzees, colobus monkeys and other primate species, guided by local experts with deep knowledge of the land and wildlife. Nyungwe is home to more than a dozen primate species and is one of Africa’s richest ecosystems.

Beyond primate tracking, Nyungwe offers hiking trails, birdwatching opportunities, dense forest landscapes and hidden waterfalls. Walking among gorillas in Rwanda is not only a breathtaking adventure, but also a meaningful way to support wildlife conservation in Africa and contribute to the well-being of local communities that protect this natural heritage.
