Weirdest recipes in the world: Balut

Balut is a fertilized duck egg with a developing embryo, steamed and served with salt, vinegar, or chili. It’s considered a delicacy in the Philippines, sold in street markets and appreciated for its intense flavor and high protein content.

Ingredients:

  • 1 fertilized duck egg (17-21 days of incubation)
  • Salt to taste
  • Vinegar and chili (optional)

Preparation:

  • Boil water in a pot and cook the balut eggs for 20-30 minutes.
  • Remove the eggs and let them cool slightly before serving.
  • To eat, break the shell at the top, drink the internal broth, and then enjoy the embryo and yolk with a bit of salt or vinegar.

Though its appearance may be off-putting to the unaccustomed, in the Philippines, balut is considered an energetic and aphrodisiac delicacy.
