10 May World Recipes: Vánočka
Vánočka is a traditional sweet bread from the Czech Republic, especially popular during Christmas time. Its origins go back centuries, with records as early as the 1400s, when it was already prepared as a special bread to celebrate the festive season. In the past, people followed curious traditions when making it—like kneading the dough in silence or even jumping while it rested. Its braided shape is said to symbolize baby Jesus wrapped in cloth, giving it a very special meaning at the family table.

Ingredients
- 500 g flour
- 50 g yeast
- 100 g butter
- 100 g sugar
- 2 egg yolks
- 3/4 cup milk
- A pinch of salt
- 50 g walnuts or almonds
- 50 g raisins
- Zest of 1/2 lemon
- Nutmeg to taste
- Vanilla extract

Step-by-step preparation
- Warm half of the milk with a teaspoon of sugar and add the crumbled yeast. Leave it in a warm place until it becomes foamy.
- In a bowl, mix the egg yolks, butter, and the remaining sugar. Add vanilla, lemon zest, a touch of nutmeg, and salt.
- Gradually add the sifted flour, then pour in the milk with the yeast. Mix well until you get a firm dough.
- Add the walnuts (or almonds) and raisins. Knead until everything is well combined.
- Cover the dough and let it rise until it doubles in size.
- Divide the dough into two parts: with one half, make a 4-strand braid. With the other, form another braid and a twisted rope.
- Place the larger braid on a greased baking tray, put the second braid on top, and finish with the twisted rope. Seal the ends.
- Let it rest for another 30 minutes.
- Brush with beaten egg and bake until golden brown.

Once cooled, dust with powdered sugar.
